Everyone has heard of the term "fast fashion" being used these days. Some very well-known brands like H&M, Zara, to name a few, are referred to as fast fashion brands.
What is the meaning of fast fashion, you ask?
Well, fast fashion basically refers to replicas of premium designs from runway brands that are produced at lower costs and in large quantities.
Have you ever wondered how these brands manage to produce such intricate designs at such low cost and with such efficiency?
All of these brands have production centers in developing countries where employees are forced to work overtime to meet the inflated demands of these clothing brands.
One would assume that these employees are paid well for the overtime. But the scenario is the complete opposite. They are barely paid the minimum wage and work in very toxic and hazardous working conditions.
Fast fashion mainly focuses on quantity instead of quality. This leads to overconsumption of fast fashion goods due to a lesser life span. As both the industry and consumers continue to embrace fast fashion, the number of goods to be disposed off or recycled has increased significantly, resulting in more fabric waste in the world.
It is high time that these issues are brought into the mainstream media and people start taking steps to reduce their fabric footprint and shop at eco-ethical brands and ban fast fashion!
Oh yeah I remember Hasan Minhaj talking about this in his show patriot act.Great Article though
Just curious - apart from the brands you mentioned, do the cheap knockoffs/replicas of elite sports or lifestyle brands (think the "Adibas" (cheap copy of Adidas) or "Rebokk" (cheal copy of Reebok) shoes/apparel you get in Indian flea markets) also count as fast fashion?
